Hello, my name is Ray.
Why would you care about me?
I’m here because I am passionate about helping anyone (especially Asians) freeing themselves from their 9 to 5 job and say goodbye to their unfair pay and military-like corporate life.
I know what it’s like to be in such situations where you do pretty much the same things every day. Clocking in, clocking out. Performing per the company-given KPIs, trying to achieve unreasonable targets, and being not so sure what kind of value you’re actually creating to the company, to the society, and even to you yourself.
All these just to get yourself paid monthly salary and believe that the company will reward you one day. This is even worse when your belief and the company’s goal doesn’t align. And it’s usually the case. When working, we want to leave a great positive impact
When working, we want to leave a great positive impact to the world.
We want to leave a legacy. But unfortunately, a company is built to make monetary profits to the shareholders.
So like it or not, it’s very frustrating when this misalignment happens. If you’re happy and fulfilled with your job, then big congrats from me. I wished I could have had the same kind of feeling. But if you’re like me, read through. I’ve done many things to get out of the 9-5 life. And I’m sure you can do it too.
I am here to offer you some free information of how I’ve been working on my 9-5 escape. (Most of my content are automated digital contents which I only created once and anyone can make use of it so it won’t cost me much time)
You can set yourself free from your day job, manage your own time, manage where you want to live and how you want to live your life. More time with your family? Yes, you can. Be there when your wife or kids need you to be? Yes, you can. Take vacation and spend quality time with them? Yes, you can. Do the work that matters to you and leave a dent to the universe? Yes, you can.
Why should you listen to me?
It was since 2002 that I’ve tried making money on the internet – so many things I’ve done. Trials and errors.
I used to sell t-shirts, caps, pants on eBay. It wasn’t as competitive as today, but it’s still very competitive back then. Still, I made some money. Good enough for a new graduate.
I beat the competitive market because I leveraged celebrity names on the keywords. And obviously, it’s not too long, all my accounts (yup it’s plural. My many accounts) got suspended by eBay.
I learned that if I want to do a long-term business, it has to be clean and legitimate.
In 2010, after reading Tim Ferris’ best-selling book: 4 Hour Work Week, I was so pumped up and returned to my little venture again. This time, I’ve chosen to do drop-shipping business. I’ve even signed up for a drop-shipping directory service (that costs me a lot of money) just to make sure that I got the best dropshipping product on my e-commerce store.
I found out two things. First, the cost for me to acquire customers is too high comparing to the dropship margin and it’s not sustainable. Second, the directory that I’ve spent money for their lifetime membership was almost never updated. (I’ve found this out many years after and I feel ripped off)
Around 2011, I’ve restarted my eBay business again (with new accounts, of course) to find out that the Apparel category is bloody red ocean. Too slim a margin for a reseller to enter. It would only make sense if you have a cost structure of a manufacturer or a big distributor.
Not too long, project closed. Lesson learned: you only run a profitable business. If money is not to be found, get rid of your ego and find a new venture.
In 2012, I’ve set up a review site (blog) hoping to gain Google AdSense income and earn some commission from hotelscombined.com. I was blogging and blogging and it’s painful. I’m not into writing that much. It’s not something I wanted to do every day for the rest of my life.
Long story short. There’re many things that I’ve done and even lost money that I can’t just list here. I’ve read so many books, gone through so many blogs, learned so many “sure-fire” way and “automatic” way to make money on the internet. I try to catch so many trends and chase one after another big hope of making money on the internet in the last 15 years.
All these money-making promises are just too many. The internet is too noisy. You don’t know which one is the right one for you. Let me emphasize this again. I’ve chased after all these promises for 15 years and spent lots of money in doing so.
Now I can tell which is noise and which makes real business.
What am I doing now?
In 2016, it’s a breakthrough. I discovered a simple truth to run a real business – online or offline. It’s to build an asset. An asset is something that offers value, and in return, earn you money times after times.
In the offline world, an asset is something like your house or your stocks. You have a house, you rent it out, and you earn a rental fee – over and over again. You have stocks, you earn dividend years after years.
These two are very low maintenance asset, which means it’s “almost automated” asset.
From time to time, you will need to maintain the house, and once in a while, you will need to do big renovation. Stocks are no different. You will need to look into the stocks, trade it sometimes, and make sure you have the right combination of stocks in your portfolio.
This truth also applies to internet business. You build an asset, automate it as much as you can, and put effort to expand/maintain it so the asset earns you money over and over.
There’s no “real passive income”, but “highly automated income” – Ray
When you got your mindset right, you can build a sustainable Internet business, and earn your living from it. Don’t believe in a hype of total passive income, please. If there’s such a thing, why would all the Forbes top business people still be working on some other things?
Having said all the above, it hasn’t always been easy. It takes lots of effort and determination to get things set up and start earning some money.
As a solo internet entrepreneur, you will need to learn all the aspects of your business – site building, domain, CMS, online advertisement, email marketing, sales, and much more. There’s a lot to learn, and again my word of caution “don’t believe in one-click website setup or ready-to-use internet money machines”.
There’s no shortcut but there’s a proven path.
Nowadays, there’re so many great online tools that make things a lot easier. But the most important element in this online business endeavor is still your willingness to continue taking actions, avoid chasing “new trends” (aka “shining objects”) and sticking around to build your business asset.
After almost 15 years, I sometimes still peek over to some new-trend and one-click money machines. It’s just human instinct to hope for a magic wand. You have to be conscious and focused. Don’t get lured by those things.
Now I am running two internet business, one selling physical goods and another one selling digital products. (This website is a part of it)
I focus on my business more than ever.
The money I earn from these two businesses still can’t match with my day job though. Yes, I’m still doing my day job. I’m being transparent here.
One reason that I don’t replace my day job with the businesses is that I invest almost all profits back into growing them fast. For me, it’s now a matter of my own decision when I would quit my day job.
What do I have for you?
It feels so liberating when you have extra income streams that are replacing your day job income. It feels so good that the day that you will be independent of your day job is coming close.
You want to do the same? Wondering if it’s possible?
Sure it is. Stay tuned.
Soon enough, through my newsletters, I will send you steps by steps of what I’ve done so far. Then you can “adopt” it and make it work for your situation. I’m sure it will save you tons of time of “trial and error” (It took me 15 years until I cut through the noises and build real business)
