Everybody knows that Sales is the most important part of any business. Without sales, your business is no more than a charity organization. Most people can easily visualize how a mom and pop shop or a supermarket make sales. But not many people can visualize how an online business make sales.
No, I’m not talking about how to complete an online purchase transaction. That’s as easy as entering a credit card number and clicking a few buttons.
I’m talking about the “how to make sales” or in other words, the “How to Build a Profitable Sales Funnels”
Making real money through an intentionally-built sale funnel is a big morale boost financially.
It’s the biggest milestone of your online business journey that you’ve intentionally done the right thing. And it’s time to scale that up.
I know that there’re some people who’re lucky enough to run a thriving internet business with a very profitable sales funnel right of the bat – without having to strategize their website design, copywriting, or email follow-up series.
But if that person is not you, then you’re not alone. That person is not me too.
Well, let’s leave the luck behind, and follow this concept
Copy and Improvement Gurus’ Sales Funnels
Okay, I’m not going to be ashamed to tell you that what we’re going to do is “copy and improvement” from the big gurus in your industry.
Because, if their funnel is working, then it’s very likely that if you “copy them and make some improvement to match your own business” then your funnel is good to go.
What? Are you saying you don’t want to copy?
Let me get this very straight.
Copy is the basis of every development in this world.
When you’re a baby, you just copied the sounds around you, right? That’s how you learn to speak. When you grew up and become a teenager, you started copying some role-model (like a movie star, your big sibling, or your parents).
Once you’ve grown more, you started to have your own unique personality. That’s when you get really unique.. well, with the flavors of those people you copied in the past.
You copy before you become unique.
The same goes for those big companies who spend millions in R&D and claim they’re researching and developing a great new product. Then they come up with very similar products with slightly feature improvement. Are those things completely new? I’ll let the mobile phone industry – Samsung, Apple, Huawei, etc, answer the question for me.
Oh, you want to be the next Steve Jobs and invent something new that make a dent to the universe. Sure, if you have the qualities and opportunities to be like him, then please do.
No sarcasm here. I really want to see how human life gets changed by one single product again. I love to see that again and again in my lifetime.
But if you’re a normal guy like me and admit that we’re no Steve Jobs but we are willing to work hard to build an online business to have more time with family, to be location-independent, or just to leave the corporate world for good, let’s study other people’s works.
Copy experts’ Sales Funnels, and make an improvement
Pick a few guru (experts) in your industry that dominates your market.
Shortlist 2-3 experts and tackle only “one” expert at a time. Don’t go for more than one at a time.
Why? Because they might have spent a few years (if not more) to build their sales funnel and even you do “copy and improvement” over their work, it’s going to take you a significant amount of time and energy.
Reverse-engineer their sales funnels
Look through their website structure, blog post, podcast, opt-in forms, email follow-up series and determine where are they in each usual stages of normal sales funnels
- List Building
- List (pre-sale) Nurturing, and
- List (up-sale) Nurturing
Put yourself in their shoes and look for commonality in their funnel. Ask yourself these questions and usually, this will lead you to their strategies:
- What’re the themes?
- What do they want at the specific step?
- Why they do what they do?
Apply the strategies to your own funnel
- Just copy the strategies at first, and while you’re applying the strategies you will see what fits your business and what not.
- Make some guess and leave the strategies that are unlikely to be working to your business.
- Test the remaining strategies, and make an improvement on what works over time.
Repeat the whole process
Once you find sales funnel that converts. Keep on improving it. Your competitor will be improving. Your audience will be changing. Your business is growing. You can’t just stay put. You need to keep on repeating this processes.
